Lacayo tied for medalist honors after the first round
KENSINGTON, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University men's golf team sits in a three-way tie for first place after the opening round of the Ryan Lee Intercollegiate, held at the Shuttle Meadow Country Club in Kensington, Conn. On Saturday.
The Pioneers are tied with Rhode Island and Manhattan through 18 holes, as all three sit at even-par 284. SHU sits on top of the 16-team field.
Leading the way for the Pioneers is junior Pablo Lacayo, as he is tied for medalist honors after a round-one 68 (-3). The Managua, Nicaragua, native tallied four birdies on the day to go along with just one bogie on the par-71 course.
Mike Rothberg joined Lacayo under par, two of the nine golfers that were under par today. Rothberg carded a 70 (-1) this morning, birdieing the second, seventh and 18th holes.
Ethan Phillips finished one stroke shy of Rothberg with an even-par 71. Phillips led the Pioneers with five birdies over his first 18 holes.
Robby Zyskowski III, Jason Pelley and Eoin Freeman rounded out SHU's competitors T38th, T47th and T65th, respectively. Zyskowski tallied a 74 (+3) today, Pelley a 75 (+4) and Freeman a 77 (+6).
The Pioneers hit the course tomorrow morning for the second and final round of the Ryan Lee Intercollegiate.
