Men's Basketball Travels to Duquesne to Open Villanova Challenge

SHU is on the road for its first of the three-game tournament

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — After opening the season with a dominant 103–46 victory on Tuesday, the Sacred Heart University men's basketball team heads to Pittsburgh to open the Villanova Challenge against Duquesne on Friday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m.

OPENING TIP

Sacred Heart and Duquesne meet for just the second time in program history.
The first meeting took place on Dec. 20, 2002, in Caguas, P.R., where the Dukes earned a 74-63 win.
Both teams are coming off season-opening victories:
- Sacred Heart defeated Merchant Marine, 103-46, on Tuesday.
- Duquesne topped Niagara, 83-63, on Monday evening.
Six Pioneers scored in double figures in SHU's opener.
The Pioneers were picked third in the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll and led the conference with three preseason All-MAAC selections:
- Anquan Hill - First Team
- Mekhi Conner - Second Team
- Nyle Ralph-Beyer - Third Team
SHU returns nine players from last year's roster.
The team welcomes two transfers (Dashon Gittens, Yann Farell) and four first-year players.
Sacred Heart enters its second season in the MAAC after a strong debut that included a seventh-place finish and a conference tournament win over Fairfield to reach the quarterfinals.
The Pioneers feature three student-athletes from Africa: Fallou Gueye, Yann Farell, and Abdou Yadd.
Sacred Heart is celebrating its 60th season of men's basketball.
Head coach Anthony Latina enters his 13th season at the helm of the program.

SCOUTING DUQUESNE

Duquesne opened its season with an 83–63 win over Niagara on Monday.
Tarence Guinyard (19) and Jimmie Williams (17) both scored in double figures.
The Dukes shot 56.4% (31–55) from the field and 42.3% (11–26) from three-point range.
Duquesne was picked ninth in the Atlantic 10 Preseason Poll and returns two starters — Cam Crawford and Jakub Necas — from last year's squad.
The Dukes feature eight newcomers on their 2025–26 roster.

LAST TIME OUT

Abdou Yadd scored in double figures in his collegiate debut.
Anquan Hill recorded his first double-double of the season, shooting 64% (9–14) from the field.
Dashon Gittens was nearly perfect from the field, going 8-for-9.
Jeremiah Jacobs and Jaden Slaughter tallied their first career points.
SHU reached the 100-point mark for the first time since Dec. 2024 (100–60 win over Manhattanville).
The Pioneers have now won their home opener in four straight seasons and earned their first season-opening victory since 2023–24.
