SHU held off a late second half comeback

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — The Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse team picked up its sixth straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) win on Saturday afternoon, holding off a late push from Mount St. Mary's to secure a 13-10 victory at home. Jake Ward led the offense with five points from one goal and four assists.

Of Note:
The Pioneers came out firing, jumping to a 5-2 lead in the first quarter behind early goals from Jack Ramsay, Tim Kiely, Declan Wilkie, Luke Catolico, and another from Kiely.

Sacred Heart's offense didn't let up in the second, as Michael Moreschi netted a quick two goals, and Ward added his lone goal of the day. The Mount answered with one, but Ramsay added his second goal of the day, his first career multipoint game as a defender, and Ryan Rooney notched his first to extend the Pios lead 10-3 at the break.

Mount St. Mary's made things interesting with a second-half surge, outscoring Sacred Heart 3-0 in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 10-4 heading into the final frame.

Rooney concluded his hattrick with two critical fourth-quarter goals that helped hold off the Mountaineers' comeback bid. John Murray scored his lone goal of the day at 6:57 in the fourth to give SHU a 13-7 lead. However, Mount scored three straight goals to pull within three, but Sacred Heart held onto the final possession to maintain the 13-10 home victory.

Graduate goalie Alex Pazienza was strong between the pipes, making 11 saves on 21 shots on goal.

Faceoff play was another key advantage for the Pioneers, who won 18 of 26. Luke Romanek went 12-for-18, and MP Thomas was 6-for-8.

With the regular season winding down, Sacred Heart is tied for first place with Canisius in the standings.
