The Pioneers opened the season with a statement win, marking their first opening game victory since 2018.
Jacksonville, Fla. – The Pioneers opened the season with a statement win, marking their first opening game victory since 2018.
The scoring got underway in the third inning when JW Fitzgerald ripped an RBI double down the left-field line, advancing Ronan Donohue to third and bringing Will Cook home. Dave Yorke followed with a two-RBI double, scoring both Ronan Donohue and Fitzgerald to give SHU an early lead.
In the fourth, Fitzgerald drove in Ronan Donohue again with a sharp single down the right-field line, extending the lead. The sixth inning saw a tense moment for the Pioneers, as they loaded the bases but escaped unscathed thanks to a textbook double play from Gavin Donohue to Chuck Tallman to Cook.
The offense continued to add runs in the seventh when Cook doubled to center, scoring Peter Link after his leadoff single up the middle. In the eighth, Kyle Cincinnati singled through the middle to bring Ronan Donohue home once more, sealing the scoring for SHU.
On the mound, Sacred Heart's pitchers delivered a masterful performance. Bryan Matuschat went six innings, allowing just six hits and two runs with three strikeouts. Hector Alejandro closed the game with three scoreless innings, giving up only one hit while striking out five.
With strong pitching and timely hitting, SHU set the tone for the season, proving they're ready to compete from the very first game.
