FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Sophomores Tommy Bull and Dom Basti each recorded hat tricks as eight different Pioneers found the back of the net to power the Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse team to a 13-12 comeback victory over Fairfield on Campus Field Wednesday afternoon.
The win marks the 100th career victory for head coach Jon Basti. Sacred Heart extends its win streak to four games and improves to 4-0, the best start in the program's Division I history.
Records:
Sacred Heart: 4-0
Fairfield: 1-2
Stat Leaders:
Tommy Bull: 3 goals
Dom Basti: 3 goals
Jake Carney: 2 goals, 1 assist
Ryan Grove: 13-23 FO, 4 ground balls, 1 goal
Craig Daria: 14 saves, 1 assist
How it happened:
Fairfield struck first with two early goals before Bull put Sacred Heart on the board, cutting the deficit to 2-1 at the end of the first quarter.
The Stags added another goal early in the second, but Basti answered to make it 3-2. Fairfield pushed its lead back to two before Ryan Grove won the ensuing faceoff and raced straight to goal for his second score of the season. Will Moulton followed with a tally to even the game at 4-4. Fairfield, however, scored in the final two minutes of the half to take a 5-4 lead into the break.
John Murray accounted for Sacred Heart's lone goal of the third quarter as Fairfield used a five-goal run to build a 10-5 advantage heading into the final frame.
The Pioneers erupted in the fourth quarter.
Daria ignited the comeback with a long clear to Bull, who went straight to goal for the score. That goal sparked an eight-goal run for Sacred Heart. Bull and Basti each scored twice during the stretch, while JJ Fox, Jake Carney, and James Moran all added goals to flip the momentum completely.
Fairfield responded with two late goals, one at the 4:16 mark and another with under a minute to play, to pull within one. The Stags won the ensuing faceoff and charged toward the goal, but Daria came up with the game-saving stop to preserve the 13-12 victory.
The teams finished nearly even in shots and faceoffs (13 apiece), but Sacred Heart capitalized on two man-up opportunities to pull out the win.
Daria secured his fourth win of the season with 14 saves, marking his third double-digit save performance of the year.
