How It Happened
The Pioneers wasted no time setting the tone. After Ronan Donohue was hit to lead things off and Peter Link worked a walk, it was Rudolph who broke things open with a two-run double. Nolan followed with an RBI single to cap a three-run first inning and give SHU an early 3-0 edge.
Mount St. Mary's chipped away with a run in the third, but the Pios responded with clean defense in the fourth, turning a smooth double play from Ronan Donohue to Tallman to Cook to keep momentum on their side.
That energy carried into the bottom half, where Sacred Heart capitalized on free passes. Cook was hit by a pitch, Gavin Donohue and Fitzgerald reached, and a string of walks brought in three more runs to extend the lead to 6-1.
The Mount began to claw back with runs in the fifth and sixth, but SHU continued to battle, getting key outs and staying in front deep into the game.
Mount St. Mary's made one final push in the ninth, stringing together runs to complete the comeback, handing Sacred Heart a tough 7-6 loss despite the Pioneers' strong start and steady effort throughout..
