Softball Falls to URI in Doubleheader

SHU fell 8-0 and 11-5 in the doubleheader
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University softball team fell in both ends of a doubleheader against Rhode Island on Wednesday afternoon at Pioneer Park. The Rams took game one 8-0 and game two 11-5.

How It Happened:
The Rams took command of game one, going up 8-0 in the first three innings. URI scored two in the first and three in the second and third innings.
SHU put runners on base in the first and second innings but could not bring any runs across.
Emily Heath threw all 5.0 innings for SHU.

How It Happened:
URI again found itself ahead in the early innings going up 5-0 in the third and 7-0 in the fifth.
SHU's offense started to come alive in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs to cut the margin to 7-4. The Pios loaded the bases with a walk, a single and hit-by-pitch before Alexa Barbera singled to right field to bring in two runs. Back-to-back wild pitches led to the next two runs as the Pioneers got within three.
Unfortunately for the Pioneers, the Rams scored four more runs in the top of the sixth to make it 11-4.
SHU got one back in the sixth on a Katherine Burras RBI single, but URI held on to claim an 11-5 victory.
Up Next:
SHU heads to Mount St. Mary's (Md.) for a weekend series, beginning on Saturday, April 18, with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
