FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University softball team heads to Maryland this weekend for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) series at Mount St. Mary's, beginning on Saturday, April 18, at noon at Our Lady of the Meadows Field in Emmitsburg, Md.
GAME INFORMATION
Game 1: Sacred Heart at Mount St. Mary's – Saturday, April 18, 12:00 p.m.
Game 2: Sacred Heart at Mount St. Mary's – Saturday, April 18, 2:00 p.m.
Game 3: Sacred Heart at Mount St. Mary's – Sunday, April 19, 12:00 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
The Pioneers are coming off a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Rhode Island on Wednesday at Pioneer Park. The Rams took the first game, 8-0, in five innings and the second 11-5. URI plated runs in the first three innings of the opener, then kept the Pioneers off the scoreboard despite SHU putting runners on in three of the first five innings.
The Pioneers' offense started to come alive in game two. Rhode Island again found itself in the lead, but this time the Pios started to rally. Trailing 7-0 in the fifth, SHU loaded the bases with two outs before Alexa Barbera sent a two-run single to right field to make it 7-2. With runners on second and third, back-to-back wild pitches plated two more Pios to cut the margin to three, 7-4, heading to the sixth inning. Unfortunately for SHU, the Rams added four more runs in the sixth to ice the game. However, the Pioneers did get one more run back in the bottom of the frame on a Katherine Burras RBI single.
EVERYTHING ELLA
First year third baseman Ella Stoops has really started to come on of late, as she has appeared in the last 10 games for the Pioneers. She has a hit in three of her last four contests, including two of SHU's five in game two against Rhode Island on Wednesday. The Livonia, Mich., native has also been playing a strong defensive third base, as she racked two putouts and seven assists over her last three appearances.
SCOUTING MOUNT ST. MARY'S
The Mount heads into the weekend with a 14-13 overall record and a 9-7 conference mark, which is sixth in the league standings. The team is coming off a three-game sweep at the hands of Canisius, losing two one-run games and the last tilt by two runs. After a four-game road stand, the Mount returns home to Our Lady of the Meadows Field in Emmitsburg, Md., where the team has won its last four home bouts.
The Mount sits near the bottom of the conference in both offensive and defensive stats, ranking ninth in batting average (0.266) and 10th in ERA (5.44). One area where it has excelled is on the bases, as the team leads the league in stolen bases (74) and triples (11).
Junior Avery Dinges has been the team's best offensive weapon, as she paces the Mount in batting average (.408), hits (42), doubles (13), triples (4), and stolen bases (32). Her 32 stolen bases rank third in the country. In the circle, Emmaleigh Zagrodnicheck, Sophia Schmehl and Ellie Meier all have ERAs between 3.32 and 3.73. Schmehl paces the team in innings pitched (64.0) and strikeouts (42).
