This weekend's series will determine if the Pios will make the MAAC Championship
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University softball team heads to Quinnipiac this weekend with a spot in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship on the line. SHU will play three games against the Bobcats, beginning on Friday at 1 p.m. in Hamden, Conn.
GAME INFORMATION
Game 1: Sacred Heart at Quinnipiac – Friday, May 1, 1:00 p.m.
Game 2: Sacred Heart at Quinnipiac – Friday, May 1, 3:00 p.m.
Game 3: Sacred Heart at Quinnipiac – Saturday, May 2, 12:00 p.m.
PLAYOFF PICTURE
Heading into the last weekend of MAAC play, the fight for the final Championship spots will be tightly contested, as teams 2-7 in the standings are all within three games of each other. The Pios are 14-10 (.583) this season, tied with Rider for the sixth seed, with the Broncs owning the tiebreaker. Six teams make the MAAC Championship, so SHU has some work to do. Winning the series over QU would greatly help, as the Pios would pass QU in the standings.
SHE IS THE CAMPION
First year pitcher Emily Campion has been on a tear recently, winning three games in a row in impressive fashion. Over her last four starts, Campion owns an outstanding 0.72 ERA with a 3-1 record. Over the last three games, she has not allowed more than three hits in any of them, going 7+ frames in all three. The Excelsior, Minn., has hit stride at the right time for the Pioneers, as they will need her help to slow down a stellar QU offense.
HENKE HOMERS
Senior Nicole Henke added two more home runs to her total on Saturday against CCSU, going yard in both games of the doubleheader. The Carlstadt, N.J., native is up to 19 home runs in her career, with a career-best eight coming this season. Henke tied Sam Kowalski for the team lead in the category. She looks to become the first Pio since Victoria LoPinto in 2024 to hit nine homers in a season and the first since Alyssa Gonzalez (13) in 2023 to reach double digits.
SCOUTING QUINNIPIAC
The Bobcats head into the weekend with a 20-17 overall record and a 15-10 mark in the MAAC, just ahead of SHU in the league standings. QU is coming off a 2-1 series win over Mount St. Mary's this past weekend, which followed a sweep at the hands of league-leading Marist the weekend prior. The Bobcats will look to bolster their stellar 7-4 record in Hamden this season.
QU's strength this season has been its offense, as it leads the MAAC in batting average (.311) and is second in runs scored per game (5.16). On the other side of the ball, the Bobcats' pitchers have struggled, as they enter the weekend ranked ninth in the league with a 4.91 earned run average.
Leading the Quinnipiac attack are seniors Sofia Vega and Kennedy DeMott. Vega is batting a team-best .390 with team highs of 27 runs scored and four triples. DeMott is second on the team with a .373 batting average, while leading the way with a .591 slugging percentage, 32 RBIs and five home runs. In the circle, sophomore Shannon Kendall owns a 4.34 ERA as one of the most-used pitchers in the league. She paces the MAAC in games started and appearances.
SERIES HISTORY
Friday's opener will mark the 62nd all-time game between the Pioneers and Bobcats, as QU leads the se-ries 31-30. Last season, the Bobcats took two of three games at Pioneer Park, with all three decided by two runs or less.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Pioneers eye a spot in the MAAC Championship, which is slated to start on Wednesday, May 6, at Marist.
