
Freshman Archer Nets 12 Kills but Pioneers Lose to Providence

FAIRFIELD, CT (September 22, 2006) - The Sacred Heart University / Asics Invitational opened play Friday night in the William H. Pitt Center with Providence and Columbia coming up winner in the tournament's opening matches. The host Pioneers fell in three to the Friars, 30-27, 31-29 and 30-27 while the Columbia Lions posted a 30-17, 30-22 and 30-23 win over Wagner in the day's opening match.
SHU freshman Annie Archer (Littleton, CO) was the only player to record double digit kills coming away with 12. She added a pair of digs and a block assist to her stat total. Junior Tiffany Phoenix (Cresskill, NJ) and senior captain Charnette Porter (Framingham, MA) each notched eight kills in the match. Phoenix added eight digs and a solo block and block assist.
Freshman setter Morgan Gross (Dumfries, VA) passed out 36 assists and just missed a double double with nine digs. She also served up four aces in the loss. Sophomore Lynne Principio (Ardsley, NY) had 10 digs.
The Friars got a balanced offensive attack with Sarah Fleming and Aida Cadres each posting nine kills. Jess Storer and Jeanette Toney both had eight kills. Toney and Katie Ledwidge came up with five solo blocks apiece in the win.
Kelly Krahenbuhl had a match-high 13 digs while Storer and Sara Sheehan chipped in with 11 each.
In the first match of the night, Columbia had a trio of double-digit kill artists led by Amalia Viti who posted 13. Cassie Ligh finished with 11 and a 13 dig effort for a double double while teammate Natalie Gerling had 10 kills with 13 digs for a matching double dip.
Wagner got a match-high 14 kills from Brandy Barnett who also collected 11 digs. Trish Morris finished with 10 kills while Sirena Laburn had 15 digs.
Play continues tomorrow with four matches in the SHU / Asics Invitational. The day gets underway at 10 am with Columbia and Providence. At 12 noon, SHU takes the court against the Lions. The 2:00 pm match features Providence and Wagner while the Pioneers will round out the tournament against fellow Northeast Conference member Wagner at 4:00 pm.
