STATEN ISLAND, NY – Wagner starting pitcher Ryan Casey allowed just one Sacred Heart run in eight innings as the Pioneers dropped game one of a four-game series, 4-1, Friday afternoon at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. The Pioneers fall to 9-8 in the NEC this season and 22-23 overall.

Senior right-hander Kody Kerski (Waterbury, CT) had his shortest outing of the season, getting through just five innings, while allowing four earned runs. Kerski falls to 7-2 on the season.

Sacred Heart scored its lone run in the top of the first inning, as lead-off hitter Kenny Byram (Ponte Vedra, FL) knocked a double down the left field line to begin the game. Following a ground out, freshman Zack Short (Hurley, NY) smacked a double of his own down the left field line to put SHU up 1-0. Sophomore Jayson Sullivan (Charlton, NY) followed Short with a single through the left side. With runners on first and third with just one out, back-to-back fly-outs ended the SHU threat.

Wagner battled back in the third inning, beginning the frame with three consecutive hits. Nick Mascelli led off the inning with a base hit up the middle. After stealing second base, Mascelli would come around to score on a Jason Gordon single up the middle. Following another hit and a fielder's choice, Wagner scored two more runs on a John Lynn sacrifice fly and then a SHU wild pitch.

Back-to-back hits to start the fifth inning yielded Wagner's fourth run of the game. Mascelli once again led off the inning with a hit, followed by a Gordon double down the left field line and Wagner led 4-1. SHU recorded just one hit in the final three innings against Casey, before going down 1-2-3 in the ninth against closer Steven Bloodworth.

The Pioneers and Seahawks are right back it tomorrow afternoon for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00.
