Sacred Heart Defeats Hartford, 6-1

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University women's tennis won its second consecutive match by the score of 6-1 on Saturday afternoon, as it defeated Hartford in non-conference action. The Pioneers swept the doubles competition en route to improving their record to an even 3-3 on the year.
Katie DeRienzo extended her winning streak to six matches with a, 6-4, 6-1, victory at first singles. Also winning in the straight sets for SHU was Paige Olson, Sabrina Navarro Lopez, and Emma Pezzullo, at fourth, fifth, and sixth singles, respectively. After narrowly prevailing in the first set by tiebreaker, Olson took control in the second set with a 6-2 triumph. Pezzullo swept her opponent, while Navarro dropped just three games.
The second and third singles matches went three sets. Nicole Rydzewski earned a fought win at number two singles, coming back to take the final set, 6-4, after losing the second by that same score. She won the opening set 6-2 .After losing the first set 6-4, Lindsey Post battled back to force a decisive third with a 6-2 victory in the second. She would go on to drop the third by that same score.
Sacred Heart dropped just five total games in the three doubles matches. Pezzullo teamed with Claudia Ruiz to take down their competitors 6-1 at third doubles. Post and Olson as well as DeRienzo and Rydzewski partnered to each defeat the opponents by the score of 6-2.
The Pioneers hit the court again next Saturday, when they face off with Providence in a match at Yale. The contest is scheduled for 5 pm.
