Sacred Heart Edged by Albany 4-3

ALBANY, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart women's tennis team split the singles matches, but were swept in the doubles ,which ultimately was the deciding factor in a 4-3 loss at Albany on Wednesday afternoon. The loss snaps a two game winning streak for the Pioneers, who are now 5-6. Albany improves to .500 at 7-7.
Katie DeRienzo, Nicole Rydweski, and Lindsey Post all picked up wins for SHU. DeReinzo was the lone Pioneer to win in straight sets, defeating her competitor 7-5, 6-2 at first singles to bounce back from having her nine match win streak snapped on Saturday. Rydweski and Post both had to earn wins by way of a third set tiebreak. Rydweski fell in the first 7-6 before forcing the third with a 6-4 second set triumph. She ultimately prevailed in the tiebreaker 10-4. Post won the first 6-3 before dropping the second 7-5. She came through with a 10-6 victory in the in the third set tiebreak to seal her third consecutive win.
Taylor Gurda fell at fifth singles 6-3, 6-2, snapping her five match winning streak.
Two of the three doubles matches came down to the wire. Post and teammate Paige Olson suffered an 8-6 setback at first doubles. Albany clinched the point, which ultimately decided the match, with another 8-6 victory at third doubles. The Great Dane pair narrowly edged Gurda and Sabrina Navarro Lopez.
Sacred Heart's next match, which was scheduled for Friday at home against Bryant, has been moved to the East Hartford Racquet Club. It will now begin at 1:30 pm instead of 1 pm.
