
Pioneers Fall In Overtime At Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Sacred Heart men's lacrosse team rallied from a 6-1 halftime deficit to take an 8-7 lead with less than a minute to play against the Vermont Catamounts at Virtue Field Saturday, but the Catamounts forced overtime then won the game 9-8.
Alex Dodge led all scorers with four goals, while Brian Masi had a game-high five points on three goals and two assists. Greg Price made seven saves in goal.
Vermont (3-4) got off to a fast start, scoring two goals in the first 3:36 to take a 2-0 lead. Sacred Heart got on the board at the 4:29 mark of the opening quarter when freshman Max Tuttle put a Masi feed past Catamounts goalie Justin Rosenberg to make the score 2-1. However, that would be the Pioneers' lone goal of the first half. The Catamounts got four straight goals from Dawes Milchling, Cam Stafford, James Barlow, and Jack Knight to take a 6-1 halftime lead.
Sacred Heart outshot Vermont 10-3 in the third quarter, but only scored once in the period. Masi scored with 4:40 left to cut the deficit to four, 6-2. His goal sparked a 6-0 run that gave the Pioneers a 7-6 lead with 8:37 to play in the game. Masi and Dodge scored 19 seconds apart early in the fourth to make the score 6-4 with 11:33 left in regulation. Dodge then scored back-to-back goals, including one man-up, to give SHU its first lead with 8:37 remaining.
Milchling tied the game 7-7 with 6:54 to play. Dodge scored his fourth goal with 0:57 remaining, putting the Pioneers ahead 8-7. Sacred Heart looked to have the game put away, as Vermont was called for a penalty with 0:46 left in regulation. The Catamounts forced a turnover which led to a Cam Milligan goal with 0:17 remaining that tied the game 8-8. Sacred Heart had the first possession of overtime, but had one shot and a turnover. Milchling won the game with 1:55 left in overtime, capping his hat trick and giving Vermont the 9-8 win.
Sacred Heart outshot Vermont 39-31, including a 26-15 edge in the second half and overtime. Vermont held an 18-13 edge in groundballs and won 10 of the 19 faceoffs. SHU was 1-for-5 with the extra-man as Vermont was 0-for-2. Milchling had three goals and an assist for the Catamounts, as Stafford had two goals and an assist.
The Pioneers open Northeast Conference play on Saturday, March 19 at Robert Morris at 1 p.m.
FIRST QUARTER
- Tuttle's goal was his sixth of the season.
- Mike Calvagna was 3-for-5 on faceoffs in the quarter.
SECOND QUARTER
- SHU outshot Vermont 9-8, but was outscored 3-0.
THIRD QUARTER
- The Pioneers outshot the Catamounts 10-3 and forced eight turnovers.
- Masi's goal ended a SHU scoring drought of 20:49.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Dodge scored all four of his goals in the fourth quarter.
- Dodge last scored four goals in a game on March 14, 2015 against Vermont at Campus Field.
