Pioneers Suffer Setback At Saint Joseph's

MERION STATION, Pa.— The Sacred Heart University baseball team fell to Saint Joseph's 13-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers (4-9) offense was held to a season-low two hits as the Hawks (7-8) outhit SHU 19-2 in the non-conference matchup at Smithson Field.

Saint Joseph's got on the board first as Giacalone plated the leadoff home run off junior Brent Teller in the bottom of the first. The Hawks picked up three straight RBI singles in the bottom half of the third to extend the lead by three.

SHU finally answered to Hawks starter Tim Brennan in the fifth inning as senior Dan Schock led off with the home run for the team's first hit of the afternoon. The Hawks continued the hit parade in the sixth inning with a seven-hit and a seven-run inning. Senior Anthony Capozziello added the other Pioneer hit with his two-out single in the top half of the seventh.

The home team tacked on two more runs in the seventh to complete the scoring.

Teller suffered his first loss of the season, allowing eight runs on 11 hits in five innings of work. Freshman Ryan LaMay made his collegiate debut in relief, allowing two runs in two innings of work.

Schock tied his season-high in home runs from a season ago with his fourth home run of the season. He also extended his hitting streak to seven straight games.

The Pioneers conclude the weekend at LaSalle with a 1:00 p.m. start tomorrow from Hank Divincent Field.
