BATON ROUGE, La.— The Sacred Heart University baseball team pulled away with the 5-3 win over Southeastern Louisiana on Friday afternoon to open round-robin weekend at Bertman Field at Alex Box Stadium.
The Pioneers (2-2) and Lions (6-4) traded runs for the first five innings before senior Dan Schock gave SHU the two-run lead on the two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning.
Schock continued his hot start to open his senior season with a 3-for-3 afternoon at the plate along with two runs batted in and a run scored. Sophomore Austin Markmann and senior Anthony Capozziello also contributed two hits each as SHU recorded 10 hits in the game.
Junior Brent Teller earned the win in his second straight start, picking up six strikeouts in six innings of work and allowing just three runs. The victory is also the 10th win of his career. Junior Jackson Aldam registered his first career save in his 41st career appearance on the mound for SHU with three shutout innings of relief.
The Pioneers scored in the first inning for the first time this season as sophomore Elijah Brown opened the game with a single up the middle. He then stole second and advanced to third on a groundout by Capozziello. Co-captain PJ DeFilippo sent the 0-1 offering from Josh Green to right field for the sacrifice fly RBI, giving SHU the 1-0 lead.
Southeastern Louisiana tied things up in the bottom of the second inning off a Drew Avans leadoff home run against Teller. The Lions took the lead in the third on a two-out RBI double by Mike Taylor. SHU answered in the top half of the fourth as redshirt-sophomore Jake Frasca drove in Markmann on the sacrifice fly to center field to tie it at 2-2.
The Lions took the brief lead again in the bottom half of the fifth inning as Taylor picked up the RBI single to center field.
SHU was due for its big inning as DeFilippo opened the top half of the sixth with a double to center field. He advanced to third on the groundout by Kyle Oliver to put the tying run at 90 feet away. Markmann went first pitch swinging against Green as he laced the single up the middle to tie things at 3-3. Schock then sent the 1-0 offering from Green over the right field fence for his second home run of the season and give SHU the 5-3 lead.
Southeastern Louisiana threatened with runners in scoring position in the bottom half of the inning but Teller got Brennan Breaud to line-out to first to end the frame and his day on the bump for SHU. Aldam got the call for the final three innings, allowing no runs and no hits while yielding four walks and striking out two.
The Pioneers continue the weekend with a matchup against 16th ranked Louisiana State University. The game will begin at 7:02 p.m. eastern time and can be seen on the SEC Network Plus.
