Pioneers Fall To Nationally Ranked UConn

STORRS, Conn.— The Sacred Heart University baseball team dropped its non-conference matchup to nationally ranked UConn on Tuesday afternoon, 13-2. The 18th ranked Huskies (28-14-1) outhit the Pioneers (14-31) 20-8 at J.O. Christian Field.
SHU got off to the early lead a sophomore Elijah Brown led off the game with a walk and proceeded to swipe both second and third base. Senior Dan Schock drove him in on a sacrifice fly to center field for the 1-0 lead. UConn swiftly jumped ahead in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of runs to take the lead and never look back.
The high-powered Huskie offense picked up five in the third and four in the fourth to take the commanding lead before finishing its side of the scoring column in the sixth with two more runs to make the score 13-1. The Pioneers picked up a pair of walks in the ninth before co-captain PJ DeFilippo plated the RBI single to center field to push the final score to 13-2.
DeFilippo and redshirt sophomore Jake Frasca contributed multiple hits for the Pioneers lineup. SHU threw eight pitchers in the midweek matchup with junior John Cerretani and senior Ethan Lonardelli contributing scoreless innings of work.
The Pioneers square off with LIU Brooklyn this weekend with a pivotal NEC matchup at New Britain Stadium. The four-game series kicks off on Thursday, May 10 at 11:30 a.m.
