Interim head coach gets promotion
FAIRFIELD, Conn.— Sacred Heart University announced that Anthony Anzevui has been promoted to head coach of men's soccer after serving as the interim head coach since Jan. 21.
"It became evident, when observing Coach Anzevui over the course of the Fall, that he was the perfect person to lead the Men's Soccer program," said Sacred Heart athletic director Judy Ann Riccio. "The competitive success that they have had is a testament to his dedication to his student-athletes. I could not be more proud to announce Anthony as our head men's soccer coach."
The Pioneers (7-8-1, 4-3-1 NEC) are having one of their best seasons ever in Anzevui's first year at the helm. In fact, Sacred Heart posted the first Division I postseason victory in program history last Sunday in the Northeast Conference Tournament first round against Saint Francis.
SHU notched its first non-conference victory since 2019 and the first-ever head coach win for Anzevui against Holy Cross this fall. The highlight of the regular season was tallying four victories in the last six games of conference play, including an unbeaten streak that stretched to four contests (Oct. 2 – Oct. 23).
"I'm honored to be named head coach at Sacred Heart," said Anzevui. "My family and I would like to thank Judy Ann Riccio for putting her trust in me to lead the program. It is a privilege to be given the opportunity at my alma mater and I am tremendously excited to continue the work we've started this season.
Anzevui, the seventh head soccer coach for the Pios, is no stranger to the program. Prior to being named interim head coach, Anzevui served as an assistant for Sacred Heart the last eight years. Within two seasons of Anzevui's hire, he helped the Pioneers improve by five victories and earn a spot in the NEC Tournament.
Anzevui played for Sacred Heart from 2005 to 2009. He was a three-time All-NEC defender and helped the Pioneers reach the NEC Tournament for the first time in 2005 and again in 2007. After graduating from SHU, he played professionally for five years, which included stints with the Western Massachusetts Pioneers (2009), F.C. Martigny in Switzerland (2011-2013) and Aldershot F.C. in England (2013).
