Dugout boss led Pioneers for five seasons.
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – After five seasons at the helm of the Sacred Heart University baseball team, head coach Nick Restaino has resigned as announced by SHU Director of Athletics Judy Ann Riccio. Assistant coach Wayne Mazzoni has been named interim head coach.
During Restaino's five seasons, the Pioneers posted a 77-142-1 record that included a 49-57 mark during Northeast Conference play. During the 2021 campaign, Sacred Heart posted 23 wins and advanced to the semifinals of the NEC Tournament.
Restaino took over the top role in 2018 after spending three seasons as assistant coach for Nick Giaquinto. He helped the SHU secure its fourth NEC Championship in 2015 and reach the NEC title game two out of three years.
Prior to joining the Sacred Heart Staff, Restaino served as the hitting coach at Southern Connecticut State in 2014. Before that he was the head baseball coach at Fordham University for seven seasons after serving as an assistant for six. He has also had previous collegiate assistant coaching stints at Lehman College and Manhattan College.
Mazzoni came to Sacred Heart for the 2007 season and has served as pitching coach for all 15 years. During his tenure, he has helped the Pioneers to 11 NCAA Tournament appearances, eight championship games and three titles (2011, 2012, 2015). Under his watch, the pitching staff has had its best run in program history, setting several school records for wins and ERA.
A national search will commence immediately for the eighth head coach in program history.
