Pioneers Fall at CCSU, 8-4

SHU looks to salvage series finale Saturday

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (April 7, 2023) – A five-run third inning stood as the difference on Friday afternoon, as host Central Connecticut State rallied from an early hole to deal the Sacred Heart University baseball team an 8-4 defeat. Justin Jordan (Darien, Conn.) went 2-for-4 with a triple and drove in two runs for the Pioneers in the Northeast Conference contest at CCSU Baseball Field. CCSU has taken the first two games of the weekend series, which will wrap up at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Sacred Heart (13-14, 8-6 NEC) got out to a hot start in support of right-hander Jack Kramer (Glen Rock, N.J.). The Pios got a run in the first, as Sam Mongelli (Marlboro, N.Y.) singled, stole second and scored on an RBI single back up the middle by Jordan. They then added three more in the third to build up an early 4-0 lead.

Mongelli started things again, with a leadoff double to left, and scored when Jordan laced a triple the other way into the gap in right-center, which chased left-hander Anthony Mozzicato from the game after just two-plus innings. Zack Kovalchik (Archbald, Pa.) greeted right-hander TJ Wainwright with a sacrifice fly, and then a double by Tim McGuire (Portsmouth, R.I.) set the stage for an RBI groundout by Tyler Galletti (Plainview, N.Y.).

Things went south for the Pios in the home half of the third though, as CCSU (17-5, 13-1 NEC) collected five hits and a walk to take the lead for good with a five-run frame. Brady Short, Hunter Pasqualini and Derek Haughey all provided RBI singles in the inning, Danny Rogers yanked an RBI double inside the bag at first and down the right-field line, and Michael Torniero chased home the fifth run with an RBI groundout.

Kramer settled back in from there and kept the Pioneers in the game through six innings, but the knockout blow came against right-hander David Aufiero (Glen Head, N.Y.) in the seventh. A pair of walks proved costly with two outs, two on and Rogers at the plate. Rogers got a first-pitch fastball to his liking and deposited it over the right-field fence for a three-run homer, his first of the season, which created the 8-4 final.

Kramer (3-3) was charged with five runs on seven hits, walked two, struck out three and suffered the loss for Sacred Heart. Wainwright (3-1) came on in the third and provided five innings of relief to pick up the win for the Blue Devils, as he surrendered one run on two hits, walked one and struck out two.
