BROOKLINE, Mass. (March 12, 2024) – A five-run bottom of the fifth broke things open on Tuesday afternoon, as the Sacred Heart University baseball team suffered a 10-0 (7 inning) defeat on the road at Northeastern. The Pioneers were held to four hits in the non-conference contest at Friedman Diamond.

Northeastern (9-4) got the only run it would need in the home half of the first. Mike Sirota knocked a two-out single to center and later came around to score on an error.

The Huskies added two more in the third, as Tyler MacGregor provided a sacrifice fly to center and Alex Lane put an RBI single back up the middle, before firmly seizing control of the game with a five-spot in the last of the fifth. Cam Maldonado, Carmelo Musacchia, Jack Goodman and Justin Bosland all had run-scoring doubles in the frame, with Goodman's being of the two-run variety.

Lane had an RBI double in the seventh, before Gregory Bozzo pushed across the 10^th run with a fielder's choice, to invoke the 10-run rule and end the ballgame.

Right-hander Jake McDowell (Brookfield, Conn.) took the ball and the loss (0-1) on Tuesday afternoon for Sacred Heart. He was charged with six runs (five earned) on five hits, walked two and struck out one.

Right-hander Michael Gemma (2-0) threw 79 pitches (50 strikes) over four scoreless innings to pick up the win for Northeastern. He surrendered two hits, walked four and struck out five.

SHU (3-10) is right back in action on Wednesday afternoon at Yale. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Bush Field in New Haven, Conn.
