The Pioneers booked an appearance in a 2024 NCAA DI women's golf regional
PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Sacred Heart University women's golf team left no doubt that it would be leaving the 2024 Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship with its third straight league title. The Pioneers led wire to wire at Callaway Resort Gardens & Golf, winning the event by 42 strokes.
SHU finished Sunday's third round, which was delayed due to rain in the morning, as the lone team to post a sub-300 score with a 299 (+19). The Pioneers finished the event with a 29-over 869 (282-288-299). Howard took second with a final score of 911, while FDU and LIU (914) tied for third and Merrimack placed (918) fifth.
The race for medalist honors was exciting till the end as it was contested between two Pioneers. Margot Rouquette pulled off a thrilling six-stroke comeback to top the individual field by one stroke at two-over 212 (72-69-71). The senior birdied three holes on the back nine to complete the comeback.
First- and second-round leader Chantal El Chaib finished second to her teammate with a three-over final score of 213 (66-69-78). El Chaib added today's second-place to a win at the 2023 NEC Championship.
Kailee Welch marked the third Pioneer in the top four, taking fourth with a final score of 219 (+9). The graduate student carded scores of 70, 72 and 77 at the event.
Jessie Burch saw an impressive rise on the leaderboard today, climbing 11 spots with a three-over 73 to finish T14th. The sophomore shaved strokes in every round, tallying scores of 79, 78 and 73.
The final Pioneer on the leaderboard was Maya Robilio, who tied for 21st. She finished the weekend with a final score of 238 (74-80-84).
Sacred Heart's dominance in the NEC can be traced back to its consistent lineup, as Rouquette, El Chaib, Welch and Robilio were apart of all three NEC Championships since 2022. Burch has won the last two league titles.
