Pios Prep For Third Straight NCAA Tournament
BRYAN, Texas – The 2023-24 Sacred Heart University women's golf team has competed in 10 different states and returns to Texas for a second time to play in the May 6-8 NCAA Bryan Regional.
The Pioneers, coming off a third straight Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship, head to the Lone Star State today to prepare for the 12-team regional hosted by Texas A&M University on its home course, Traditions Club.
The No. 11 seed will have a practice round on Sunday on the par-72, 150 slope course that is going to play 6,376 yards. The low five teams and the low individual not on one of those squads advance to the national finals at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
The regional venues set up longer and are more challenging than the NEC sites. The Pios' three-round total in 2022 at Stanford was 938 compared to a 944 at Athens, Ga., last May. They hope to take advantage of a second Texas excursion with 80-degree temperatures in the forecast to improve those numbers.
SHU finished second out of 14 teams at the Texas State Invitational in February at New Braunfels.
"Very excited to play at one of the best courses in Texas," said Margot Rouquette, a SHU senior who was recovering from winter surgery and missed the first trip to Cowboy country but healed well enough to earn medalist honors at the NEC Championships. "I am mostly excited to play against better schools and be paired with the best players in the country. It is always a great experience to play where the competition is better. I also can't wait for the nice weather."
The host Aggies are the No. 2 seed, while Louisiana State University makes the 364-mile trip to Bryan as the top team.
"I'm excited to tee it up at Traditions Golf Club next week. The course looks narrow, scenic and challenging," said senior Chantal El Chaib, the 2023 NEC Player of the Year. "The Texas wind will add another layer of challenge, so we will have to have good strategic shot making and focus on hitting fairways and greens, but most importantly having fun."
