BRYAN, Texas – The Sacred Heart Women's Golf Team opened play at this 2024 NCAA Regional by shooting 22 over par (310) which puts them in 12th place with two rounds to play. The Pios are four strokes behind Sam Houston and five from Arkansas Little Rock.
Senior Chantal El Chaib led the squad with a 74, which was two over par on the 6,376-yard course at Traditions Club. She shot a 35 on the back in the morning and posted a 39 in the afternoon on the front side. She had consecutive birdies on the back that put her at two under after four holes. El Chaib had two very special shots in round one. On the 12th hole she holed out a chip from 13 yards out, while approaching the third green, from 26 yards out sitting on heavy pine straw, she chipped to within 12 inches.
Graduate captain Kailee Welch was one shot back at 75 after going 36-39 on the venue that carries a slope of 150. She carded threes on a pair of par fours for two of the team's eight birdies on the day. Her highlight today might have been the best putt of the tournament thus far. Welch sunk an uphill, downhill bender from 40 feet out on the fourth hole.
Things unraveled a bit for the three-time defending conference champions late today. The Pios, who did not get to play a normal practice round due to the rains that have soaked the area the last few weeks, were tied or within one stroke of Sam Houston and Little Rock for the 10th spot until the last three holes. They get another crack at the course in round two on Tuesday. The three-day event finishes on Wednesday.
