The Pioneers will play six tournaments in the fall
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University men's golf team is set to open the 2024-25 campaign on Sunday, Sept. 1, at the two-day Red Bandanna Invitational, hosted by BC at Turning Stone Resort in Verona, N.Y.
The Pioneers had a solid 2023-24 season, finishing in a tie for second at their last Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship. SHU ended the season with five top-5s, including a win at the SHU Fall Classic.
Sacred Heart returns a majority of its starting five from a year ago, as Eoin Freeman, Pablo Lacayo, Jason Pelley and Mike Rothberg all come back as upperclassmen. Rothberg and Lacayo ranked in the top three on the team in scoring average at 73.6 and 75.0, respectively.
For the newcomers, SHU brought in one graduate transfer and four first years. Ethan Phillips will play his graduate season with the Pioneers after a successful career at nearby Post. The Belleville, Ontario, native's accolades include being a two-time PING NCAA Division II East All-Region Team member in 2023-24 and 2021-22. In his first season, he was also named the CACC Player and Rookie of the Year.
SHU's fall slate features six tournaments, starting with the Red Bandanna Invitational on Sept. 1-2. Sacred Heart will then compete at the Ryan Lee Intercollegiate (Sept. 20-22), before hosting the SHU Fall Classic on Sept. 29 – Oct. 1 at the Great River Golf Club.
Part of the team will also head to the UConn Invitational on Sept. 29 – Oct. 1. SHU will then leave the Nutmeg State to take part in the Matthews Auto Collegiate Golf Invitational, hosted by Binghamton at the Links at Hiawatha Landing in Apalachin, N.Y. on Oct. 6-7. The team ends the fall slate at the Wagner-hosted Metropolitan Intercollegiate, which will take place Oct. 27-29 at the Montclair Golf Club in Montclair, N.J.
The spring slate will feature SHU's first appearance in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship. The date and time of the event is yet to be announced.
