Men's Golf Wins Abarta Coca-Cola Collegiate Invite for Third Victory of Season

All four scoring Pioneers placed in the top 28

EASTON, Pa. – The Sacred Heart University men's golf team claimed its third win of the season at the Abarta Coca-Cola Collegiate Invitational on Sunday and Monday at the Northampton Country Club in Easton, Pa.

The Pioneers topped a 16-team field with a 36-hole score of 580 (+4). SHU held the lead after the first 18 holes on Sunday with a 293 (+5) before carding the round of the tournament today with a 287 (-1). Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Fairfield finished second at +9, while fellow league members Iona (6th), Merrimack (9th), Siena (11th), Canisius (12th) and Niagara (16th) also competed. 

Mike Rothberg led the way for the Pioneers by tying for third with a combined score of 141 (-3), which was one stroke shy of medalist honors. The junior carded a two-under 70 yesterday and a one-under 71 today. He finished the event with six birdies to just three bogies. 

Ethan Phillips was not far behind his teammate in a tie for sixth at two-under 142. He also tallied a two-under 70 yesterday while going even-par 72 today. Phillips finished tied for the team lead with seven birdies at the tournament. 

Pablo Lacayo was next on the leaderboard for SHU in 12th. The junior from Managua, Nicaragua, carded a one-over 145 for the event, going 75 (+3) before shaving five strokes today with a 70 (-2) today. Lacayo tied Phillips with seven birdies over 36 holes. 

Eoin Freeman, Robby Zyskowski III and Yu Chan Ji Lim round out SHU's competitors at the event in T28th, T43rd and T77th. Freeman carded a six-over 150 at the event after rounds of 77 (+5) and 73 (+1). Zyskowski posted a final score of 152 (+8) and Lim recorded a 159 (+15). 

The Pioneers will next head to the three-day MAAC Championship spanning Thursday-Saturday, Apr. 17-19, at Disney's Magnolia Golf Course in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
