Trudeau tallied three points and scored his 23rd goal
WEST POINT, N.Y. – For the second straight season, the Sacred Heart University men's ice hockey team secured the No. 2 seed in the Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) Tournament after recording a 3-2 win at Army on Friday evening.
Records:
SHU: 18-12-3, 14-8-3 AHA
Army: 12-15-6, 7-14-4 AHA
How It Happened
Controlling the action in the first period, the Pioneers owned a 12-9 shots-on-goal advantage. Yet, Army capitalized on a turnover in the neutral zone, scoring an unassisted goal with just 36 seconds left to lead 1-0 after one.
Ironically, SHU got a spark during a five-minute power play for the Black Knights. After a Pioneers' major at 2:39 in the second, Sacred Heart made the best of it by scoring its first short-handed goal of the season. At 4:23, Reid Pabich and Felix Trudeau perfectly executed an odd-man rush to tie the score at 1-1.
For the major, the Pios allowed just two shots on goal, while an Army hold ended up turning the final 1:35 of the power play into 4-on-4 hockey.
SHU took the lead at 19:19 in the frame after nearly back-to-back penalties on the Black Knights. After burning a penalty with two minutes left in the period, another infraction with 1:33 on the clock proved to be a killer for Army. The Pioneers reeled off three quick shots with the extra skater, as the third led to a rebounded goal for Gavin Bryant.
Continuing to keep the Black Knights at bay in the third, the Pios forced Army to pull its goalie. Trudeau responded with his 23rd goal of the season on an empty net, while Pabich and Michael Rubin assisted on the game-winner.
Army got a power play goal late to ice a 3-2 win for the Pioneers.
Between the pipes, Ajeet Gundarah made 30 saves, allowing just one even-strength goal. Gundarah has won three straight games and is 9-5-1 on the season.
