Pepe Leads Pioneers With Career-High Five Points
FAIRFIELD, Conn.—Sophomore Matt Pepe recorded a career-high five points to lead the Sacred Heart University men's lacrosse team to a 16-11 victory over Stony Brook on Friday afternoon at Campus Field. With the win, the Pioneers open the season victorious for the second straight year and earn their second consecutive win over the Seawolves.

How it happened:
Stony Brook jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before senior captain John Murray netted the first goal of the season at the 4:52 mark to pull Sacred Heart within one. The Seawolves added another tally, but the Pioneers responded with back-to-back goals from Pepe and Michael Moreschi to even the score at 3-3 heading into the second quarter.
The teams traded goals throughout the second frame, but Sacred Heart closed the quarter with two straight scores from first-years Ryan Grove and Jake Carney to take a 7-6 lead at halftime.
Stony Brook struck first in the third quarter, and the teams continued to go back and forth until the Pioneers broke through with three consecutive goals to build an 11-8 advantage. The Seawolves added one more before the end of the period, trimming the deficit to 11-9 entering the fourth.
Sacred Heart pulled away in the final frame, outscoring Stony Brook 5-2, highlighted by a pair of goals from junior JJ Fox. Murray capped the scoring with the final goal of the afternoon to secure the 16-11 home victory.
Sacred Heart dominated at the faceoff X, as first-year Ryan Grove went 22-for-29 and collected eight ground balls in his collegiate debut.
Senior goalkeeper Craig Daria was strong in his first career start, making 16 saves.
The Pioneers held advantages in shots (57-43) and faceoffs (22-8).
