How It Happened
Friel set the tone early, striking out two batters in the top of the first before the Pioneers exploded for four runs in the bottom half, drawing walks from Schmutz, Ronan Donohue, Cook, Wilson, Rey, and Martin, along with a hit-by-pitch from Bowes, to take a 4–0 lead.
In the second, Graham Willerer recorded a strikeout as New Haven got on the board with one run.
The Pioneers broke the game open in the third inning, as Nolan walked and Kidwell singled to put runners on before Martin and Bowes each walked to force in a run. Schmutz followed with a two-RBI single to score Kidwell and Martin, and later came around on a sacrifice fly from Cook. Wilson walked, Rey singled to bring him home, and after additional walks from Nolan and Kidwell, Rey scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 11–1.
Sacred Heart continued to add on in the fourth, with Bowes and Schmutz both hit by pitches and Ronan Donohue drawing a walk before Cook drove in a run with another sacrifice fly. Schmutz scored on a wild pitch, and after Wilson walked, Rey singled to score Donohue. Nolan reached on a fielder's choice, Kidwell was hit by a pitch, and Martin walked to bring home another run, pushing the lead to 15–1.
New Haven scored two runs in the fifth, but the Pioneers answered in the bottom half as Schmutz and Cook walked and Schmutz later scored on a throwing error by the catcher to make it 16–3.
Andrew Sager and Will Saxenmeyer each recorded a strikeout in the final two innings as Sacred Heart closed out the win.
