A three-run first inning gave Sacred Heart the momentum it needed to hold off Rider for a 5–4 win.
Wappingers Falls, N.Y. – A three-run first inning gave Sacred Heart the momentum it needed to hold off Rider for a 5–4 win.
Sacred Heart jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Ronan Donohue led off with a single and Will Cook followed with a double, setting up Gavin Donohue's three-run home run to give the Pioneers a quick 3–0 advantage.
Rider responded in the third inning with a run and continued to chip away, eventually tying the game at 3–3 in the fourth.
On the mound in the sixth, George Katsaros delivered a key inning with two strikeouts to keep the game even.
The Pioneers regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Gavin Donohue came through again, driving in both Cook and Ronan Donohue to put Sacred Heart back in front 5–3.
Rider added a solo home run in the ninth, but Sacred Heart held on to secure the 5–4 victory.
