How It Happened
Sacred Heart struck first in the opening inning, manufacturing an early run to take the lead. Peter Link worked a leadoff walk and quickly moved into scoring position with a stolen base. After JW Fitzgerald reached and Gavin Donohue advanced the runners, Donohue swiped second before Will Rudolph brought Link home on a groundout, giving the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage.
On the mound, Bryan Matuschat settled in early, recording a strikeout in the bottom of the first to keep Marist off the board. The Red Foxes answered in the second inning, plating a run to even the score, then added another in the third despite Matuschat recording his second strikeout of the afternoon.
Matuschat continued to battle and added another strikeout in the sixth to keep Sacred Heart within reach. Marist created separation in the later innings, scoring two runs in the seventh before adding five more in the eighth. Christian Trantino came on in relief and recorded a strikeout as the Pioneers continued to compete late.
