Pioneers Cruise Past Puerto Rico Mayaguez

MAYAGUEZ, P.R. – The Sacred Heart men's tennis team bounced back from a tough 4-3 loss on Wednesday with a 9-0 sweep of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez on Thursday, ending its Spring Break trip an even 1-1. SHU controlled play, as the Pioneers did not lose a set to move to 5-7 on the year.
Sacred Heart began the day by dominating doubles play, dropping just a total of two games between the three matches. Brian Power and Matt Dean moved over .500 to 8-7 when playing together, taking their first doubles match 8-1. SHU's two others doubles pairs were teamed together for the first time this season, as Mathieu Pilote-Schraenen and Derek Chapman swept their second doubles competitors and Cory Seltman and Anthony Santino took an 8-1 decision at third doubles.
Those six then all swept their respective singles matches, with Pilote and Dean each winning a second straight match on the trip. Pilote's victory gave him a 9-9 singles record on the year, tying him with Chapman and Seltman for most wins on the team after those two won at third and fifth singles. Power is right behind the trio with eight after cruising at first singles, while Santino's triumph at sixth singles was his first dual match of the year.
The Pioneers return to the court next Wednesday, traveling to Saint Peter's for a 3:30 pm start.
