SHU Edged by Haverford in Back and Forth Spring Break Opener

LAS, PALMAS, P.R. – The Sacred Heart men's tennis team was on the wrong side of two three set losses in its 4-3 setback to Haverford on Wednesday afternoon. The first game of its Spring Break trip in Puerto Rico, the Pioneers have now dropped four in a row to fall to 4-7 on the season.
After a Haverford sweep in doubles play, four of the six singles matches went to three sets. Karan Narula was the lone Pioneer to win in straight sets, but not until an 11-9 second set tiebreak triumph after taking the first set 6-4 at fourth singles.
Matt Dean and Mathieu Pilote-Schraenen prevailed in their three set thrillers, at second and fifth singles, respectively. Both went up a set only to fall in the second, forcing a third set super tiebreaker. Dean was pushed to the brink, but came out on top 11-9, while Pilote won his more comfortably, 10-6, to move into a tie for the team-lead in singles victories with eight.
Those results meant that either a Brian Power or Cory Seltman win would clinch the match for Sacred Heart. Power went ahead after taking a first set tiebreaker at first singles, but after getting swept in the second, he could not regroup in the super tiebreaker, falling 10-6. Seltman battled back from dropping a tough first set tiebreaker at first singles to force the super tiebreaker with a 7-5 triumph in the second. He could not carry the momentum into the tiebreaker though, falling 10-2.
Narula and Chapman came closest to giving SHU a victory in doubles play, losing a tiebreaker 7-3 at third doubles. Haverford won the other two matches by a score of 6-2.
SHU wraps up play on its Spring Break trip tomorrow when it takes on Puerto Rico Mayaguez at noon.
