2016 NEC Tennis Championship Brackets
Seeding was announced for the upcoming 2016 Northeast Conference Tennis Tournament on Monday and both the Sacred Heart women and men have earned top four seeds. Hosted at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, N.J., the Championships will begin on Friday with the Quarterfinals and run through Sunday's championship matches. Bryant and Fairleigh Dickinson received the first and second seeds on both the men's and women's side.
Standing at 9-9 overall and 2-2 in NEC, the SHU women earned the third seed and will match up with sixth seeded Wagner on Friday at 11:30 am. The Pioneers recently swept the Seahawks on April 8, winning all 12 singles sets and dropping just five total games in doubles play.
Sacred Heart is led by NEC Player of the Year hopeful Katie DeRienzo, who leads the league in both overall wins (17) and dual wins (15), the later of which is double more than any other player. She has also paired with partner Taylor Gurda for ten dual wins in doubles play, which is atop the conference as well. Also leading the league in respective categories are Olivia Podsiebierski with a 6-5 third singles record and Lindsey Post and Paige Olson with a 6-1 dual mark at second doubles.
As for the men, Sacred Heart secured the four seed after a campaign that saw the Pioneers go 8-13 overall and 2-2 in the conference. SHU is paired with fifth seeded Wagner in the Quarterfinals, which will start at 9 am on Friday. The contest will be a rematch of a 5-2 Sacred Heart victory less than two weeks ago on April 10. The Pioneers won doubles points with victories at the first and third position before taking five of the six singles matches.
SHU is led by Cory Seltman's 14 singles win and Derek Chapman's 17 victories in doubles. Chapman is also one of two Pioneers to record double-digit wins in both singles and doubles play, joining Brian Power.
