WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J.— A one-out single by freshman Matt Sorrento in the bottom of the ninth scored classmate Isiah Daubon from second to give the Sacred Heart University baseball team the 9-8 victory over the University of Maine at MU Baseball Field.
The Black Bears (9-22) rallied to tie the game with two runs in the top half of the ninth before the Pioneers (9-17) recorded the victory in walk-off fashion for the first time this season.
Maine got on the board first as Danny Casals won an eight-pitch at-bat against senior James Taubl in the first with a one-out home run over the left field wall.
SHU used its plate discipline in the bottom half of the inning, loading the bases on two walks and a hit by pitch. Junior Kyle Oliver six-pitch walk to tie the game up at 1-1. Co-Captain PJ DeFilippo recorded the RBI groundout for the second run before fellow co-captain Cody Doyle recorded the RBI walk in the Pioneers fifth walk of the inning.
The Pioneers continued to attack the Black Bears pitching in the third with a walk and back-to-back singles. A wild pitch with the bases loaded allowed DeFilippo to score from third before sophomore Austin Markmann recorded the RBI groundout to make the score 5-1. SHU added its sixth run in the fourth on an RBI single by DeFilippo.
Maine picked up a pair of runs in the fifth on a throwing error on a steal at third and Casals second long ball of the game. Another two-run inning cut the deficit to 6-5 in the top half of the sixth on a home run by Christopher Bec and an RBI fielder's choice by Kevin Doody.
SHU was looking for that run support in the bottom half of the inning and got it off the bat of Markmann with an opposite field two-run home run to bring the score to 8-5. Maine scratched one run back in the eighth as Doody recorded the RBI groundout.
The Black Bears were down to the last two outs before a single and double put the tying run in scoring position. Jonathan Bennett tied things up at 8-8 with his bloop single into center field.
The Pioneers looked to take momentum back in the ninth as Daubon led off the inning with a single to center. After sophomore Stephen Thibault recorded the sacrifice bunt to move the runner into scoring position, Sorrento stepped up to the plate. He ripped a single to the gap in short as Daubon was waved home sliding in just ahead of the throw.
SHU had 10 batters reach base on the day with eight hits and 10 walks drawn. Sorrento and Frasca led the way with two hits each. Markmann plated a season-high three runs batted in and his first home run of the season.
Taubl pitched six innings in the no-decision on the bump for the Pioneers. The lefty surrendered four earned runs while striking out five. Freshman Ryan LaMay pitched two innings of relief allowing two hits and one unearned run. Frasca earned his second win of the season after pitching the final third in the ninth.
The Pioneers conclude the weekend with a matchup against Monmouth on Saturday, April 14 first pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
