AHA CHECK IN
As we continue to play through the end of the regular season, the AHA standings could still swing multiple ways. The Pios are currently tied for fourth with Robert Morris at 36 points. SHU is three points behind its opponent this weekend, Holy Cross, making this series critical to the eventual final standings. The Pios are eying at least a top-four finish to host a quarterfinal series at the Martire Family Arena.
ELITE ELLIS
Senior Noah Ellis collected his second AHA Defenseman of the Week honor on Tuesday morning, after his outstanding play at Bentley over the weekend. The Urbandale, Iowa, native led the team with three points on a goal and two assists, accumulating all of those points in SHU's 4-0 win over the Falcons on Friday. He also finished with a game-high five blocks in Saturday's setback, which was his 110th collegiate game.
LAST TIME OUT
The Pioneers split a weekend series at AHA-leading Bentley on Friday and Saturday. SHU took the first game by a 4-0 final score after a complete showing from the team. After a scoreless first period, Sacred Heart's offense opened the scoring in the second with goals from Vitaly Levyy and Ray Fust. Levyy's goal came on the power play, while Fust's came a few seconds after a power play expired. Reid Pabich scored next, midway through the third, while Ellis put the finishing touches on the win with a goal late in the frame. Between the pipes, Teagan Kendrick made 28 saves to collect his second shutout of the season.
Saturday was not nearly as much fun for the Pios, as Bentley won 5-1. Things looked promising at the start of the game as SHU went ahead 1-0 30 seconds into the bout on Fust's second of the weekend. Bentley evened the score in the first and took over the contest with a three-goal second. However, SHU had one close play that was not called a goal after review, and a scored goal was waived off after a successful challenge from the Falcons.
SCOUTING THE CRUSADERS
Holy Cross sits at exactly .500 (14-14-2) going into Friday. The Crusaders are third in the conference standings, with 39 points, and own a 12-8-2 record in league play. Holy Cross is coming off a split at Canisius in its most recent series, winning the first game by a 4-3 final score before falling in the finale 5-3. With Saturday's loss, the Crusaders fell to 6-8-1 in road games this season. Holy Cross heads into the weekend as one of the strongest offenses in the AHA, as it ranks second in the league with 3.10 goals per game.
Junior forward Jack Stock paces the team in points. Seniors Matt DeBoer and Michael Abgrall lead the way in goals.
