SHU scored a season-best three power play goals
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University men's ice hockey team scored a season-high three power play goals to pick up a 5-1 over Holy Cross in Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) play Friday evening at the Martire Family Arena.
Records:
SHU: 16-12-3, 12-8-3 AHA
Holy Cross: 14-15-2, 12-9-2 AHA
How It Happened
The Pioneers took the lead first in tonight's game, needing just 5:42 to go up 1-0. The play started with Noah Ellis poking the puck away from a Holy Cross before it found Stephane Huard in the neutral zone. Huard then sent a back-handed pass to Jake Bongo, who split a defenseman and the goalie for an easy score to glove side.
After Holy Cross evened the score at 8:39, SHU needed less than four minutes to get back to the lead. At 12:16, Gavin Bryant made it 2-1 SHU with a power play goal. With the extra skater, Mikey Adamson sent a pass to Reid Pabich at the left goal line before finding Bryant in the slot for a snipe to the top right corner.
SHU added to the lead 11:31 into the second with the team's second power play goal. Pabich took his turn scoring on the extra-man opportunity, forcing a rebound off a Felix Trudeau saved shot by the goaltender.
The Pioneers struck again on the power play to score the first goal of the third period. At 3:15, Noah Ellis scored on a wide-open net as Vitaly Levyy bypassed the collapsing defense to find Ellis all alone on the left side of the ice.
Ethan Wolthers put the capper on the victory with a goal in the final 1:02 of the contest. Wolthers buried a Ray Fust backhanded pass to the goalie's glove side to make it 5-1.
Ajeet Gundarah made 22 saves to pick up the win. Gundarah returned from an injury to make his first start since the Friendship Four Tournament.
