How It Happened
Yale struck first in the opening inning with a two-run home run, but Sacred Heart responded immediately in the bottom half. Peter Link singled to right field and stole second before Ronan Donohue reached on a single, allowing Link to advance to third. Gavin Donohue then delivered a two-run homer to even the score at 2–2 after one inning.
Yale regained control in the second, scoring six runs to take the lead.
The Pioneers answered with two of their own in the bottom of the inning as Daniel Rice III singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Nathan Bowes followed with a single to center, sending Rice to third, and Link walked to load the bases. Ronan Donohue drew an RBI walk to bring in Rice, and Jacob Schmutz reached on a fielder's choice to score Bowes, cutting the deficit to 8–4.
Yale continued to add on, plating two runs in the third and another in the fourth to extend its lead. Sacred Heart's pitching staff settled in at times, with Andrew Sager recording a strikeout in the fifth, Christian Trantino adding one in the sixth, and James Aselta striking out a batter in the eighth. Yale added two more runs in the sixth and one in the ninth.
In the bottom of the eighth, Link provided a spark with a solo home run, but the Pioneers could not close the gap as Yale went on to secure a 14–5 win.
