SHU Makes First Road Trip of the Season... The Pioneer women's lacrosse team makes their first trip away from Campus Field this season when they visit Easton, Pennsylvania Tuesday afternoon to face the Lafayette Leopards. SHU is coming off a 14-12 loss to Robert Morris in Northeast Conference action on Sunday as the take on Lafayette before a two-game league road trip this weekend. The Leopards are 0-7 this season and are coming off a 17-6 loss to Holy Cross in their Patriot League opener. SHU's Brianna Bubeck scored nine goals with an assist in two games last week, earning NEC Player of the Week honors.
The Series... Sacred Heart and Lafayette will meet for the first time on the lacrosse field Tuesday afternoon.
Up Next... The Pioneers return to conference play this weekend at Monmouth, Friday March 30th and Mount St. Mary's, Sunday April 1st.
Last Time Out... The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team battled back from a 7-1 first half deficit and held a 12-10 lead midway through the second half but couldn't hold on as Robert Morris scored four unanswered to come away with a 14-12 win in Northeast Conference play Sunday afternoon in Fairfield. The Pioneers got five goals from senior Brianna Bubeck and three goals and two assists from junior Liz Ottey. Robert Morris burst out of the gates putting three goals on the board by the 27:07 mark, forcing a SHU timeout. The Colonials kept their early run going, running out to a 7-1 advantage with 16:33 on the clock with the only SHU score coming off the stick of Alyssa Harris. Sacred Heart began to mount a comeback with 15:45 left, using a 6-1 run to pull within 8-7 of the Colonials. The Colonials went to leading scorer Jenn Collins for her second of the half off a feed from Blakeley as she sent her team into the half with a 9-7 lead. The Pioneers took control right out of the break using a 4-0 run to tie the game and take their first lead. Robert Morris answered the run at 19:52 but SHU pushed their lead back to two, 12-10, at 13:59. The Colonials again cut the lead to one on Josephine Zizic's ninth goal of the year from Blakeley at 10:22. Ottey was sent off with a yellow card at 9:18 and the Colonials took full advantage, swinging the momentum and scoring three times in the span of 1:14 to take the lead back for good.
Bubeck Named NEC Player of the Week... SHU senior Brianna Bubeck earned the Northeast Conference Player of the Week and SHU / Enterprise Rent-A-Car Student-Athlete of the Week awards. In Friday's win over LIU, Bubeck led the offensive charge with four goals and an assist in the win, registering her 100th career point. In addition, she collected seven draw controls, four ground balls and caused two turnovers. In Sunday's loss, she matched her career high by scoring five goals against Robert Morris.
SHU Among the Nation's Stat Leaders... The Sacred Heart Pioneers are currently tied for 6th in this week's NCAA rankings in caused turnovers per game. The Pioneers are averaging 11.17 caused turnovers per game. American and Quinnipiac lead the nation at 14.00 per game. SHU is tied for 13th with California in draw controls per game at 13.83. Boston College leads the country at 16.75 per game. Senior Brianna Bubeck is 5th in the country in draw wins at 29 (4.83 per game). Bubeck is tied for 11th in goals per game (3.33) and 26th for points per game (4.17). Senior Maureen Hohn is 3rd in the country at 2.67 caused turnovers per game (16).
Pioneers in the NEC Stat Rankings... The Pioneers are among the conference leaders offensively and defensively. SHU is 3rd in the NEC in goals per game (11.17) and 4th in points per game (15.67). SHU is 5th in the league in assists (4.50), 3rd in shots per game (26.17) and shot percentage (.427). Defensively, the Pioneers ranked 2nd in caused turnovers (11.17) and 4th in goals against (11.64).
History... This is the Pioneer's ninth year of competition in the Northeast Conference. Sacred Heart has qualified for the NEC Tournament five times and posts a 83-68 Division I record. The Pioneers have posted 10 wins three times and have not had a losing season since 1998.
