Fairfield, CT - Senior Michelle Bruckner (Clarle Place, NY) made her women's lacrosse senior day a memorable one on Saturday, scoring five times to help the Sacred Heart Pioneers to a 15-13 win over visiting Monmouth University in a Northeast Conference battle.
Sacred Heart, now 9-4 overall and 5-1 in the NEC, scored the last three goals of the first half to take an 8-5 lead into the intermission. Juniors Jeanne Carroll (E. Rockaway, NY)and Christina Macchia (Carle Place, NY), along with Bruckner each tallied in the final 5:38 of the period.
Monmouth, 5-8 overall and 4-1 in the conference, scored the first four goals of the second half in just under six minutes to take a 9-8 lead. Junior Jennie Versaggi (Massapequa, NY) had the last two goals in that span just 1:15 apart.
The Pioneers took the lead back on consecutive goals by sophomore JoAnn Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) and Bruckner, giving SHU an 10-9 lead with 20:00 to play.
The Hawks answered with two goals of their own to retake the lead 11-10. Freshman Kaitlyn Robinson (Huntington Station, NY) scored with 16:21 to play, and Jeanette Stott (Upper Darby, PA) put Monmouth up with 12:54 left.
Junior middie Jackie Reichert (Nesconset, NY) tied the game for the Pioneers less than a minute later. Bruckner's fifth tally of the game put Sacred Heart ahead 12-11 with 8:52 to go.
Monmouth came right back to knot the score once again on a score by Laura Levins (Voorhees, NJ) with 6:42 left. It took Carroll just :44 to put Sacred Heart back up with an unassisted goal.
The Hawks would tie it at 13-13 with 4:46 to play on a pretty one-time goal by senior Lisa Cherill (Voorhees, NJ) from Stott.
Mary Romano (Baldwin, NY) put the Pioneers up for good with her second goal of the game with 2:52 left, off a pass from Reichert. Reichert gave the Pioneers an insurance goal with :06 to go.
Junior Amy Lavoie (Nashua, NH) made 15 saves for the Pioneers, including one on a point-blank shot by Monmouth's Courtney Richardson (Toms River, NJ) with :20 that could have tied the game. Emily Brugger (Medford, NJ) played the first half in net for Monmouth and made four saves. Laura Strina (Matawan, NJ) played the second and made seven stops.
