FAIRFIELD, CT (March 15, 2005) - Stony Brook University's Alexa Milano scored with just 23 seconds left in regulation to give the Seawolves a 12-11 win over Sacred Heart University Tuesday afternoon in Fairfield, CT. The Pioneers trailed 11-9 late in the second half and battled back to tie the game with 53 seconds left before Milano's heroics saved the day for Stony Brook.
The game opened with a flurry of offensive action, as both teams combined for five goals in the first five minutes of action. The Seawolves jumped out in front with consecutive scores by Amy Taylor and Carlee Buck at 26:57 and 26:22. SHU got on the board as sophomore Brianna Bubeck (Bethlehem, NY) scored the first of her four goals just 12 second later.
Stony Brook took a 4-1 lead at the 21:07 mark after goals by Danielle Werner and Katie Savino but then went into a drought offensively and were held scoreless for nearly 20 minutes. Meanwhile, the Pioneers went on a run, rattling off four-straight on a pair from Bubeck and a goal apiece from senior JoAnn Montesarchio (Cortldant Manor, NY) and junior Emily Tully (South Windsor, CT). SBU's Jill Gridley ended the drought scoring with 37 seconds left to cut the Pioneer lead to 6-5 at the half.
The Seawolves tied the game three minutes into the second half as Werner set up Kristen Dupuis who buried her shot. The two teams traded goals before the Pioneers grabbed a two-goal advantage, 9-7, on an unassisted Montesarchio goal at 18:55 and freshman Alyssa Harris's (Kings Park, NY) score at the 16:51 mark. Stony Brook wasted little time in taking control, winning the draw and scoring just 13 second later.
Carlee Buck led the Seawolves on a 4-0 run on the strength of three-straight from the sophomore's stick and another by Katie Savino to pull SBU in front 11-9 with 6:13 to go. The Pioneers staged a late come back to pull even in the closing seconds. Montesarchio scored her third of the game at 2:07 and Harris finished a Bubeck pass with 53 seconds to pull even at 11-11.
The Seawolves took the ensuing draw and set up for their final attempt at the win. With a loose ball bouncing in front of the net, Milano scooped the ball up and beat Pioneer goalkeeper Maggie Brauer (Blauvelt, NY) for the game winner with 23 ticks to go. Stony Brook won the final draw of the game and killed out the rest of the clock to remain a perfect 3-0 on the year.
The Pioneers, who fall to 3-1 with the loss, were led by Bubeck who collected seven points on four goals and three assists. Montesarchio scored three times followed by Harris' two and a goal apiece from senior Natalie Smith (Wantagh, NY) and Tully. Brauer made five saves in the cage in taking the loss.
Buck finished with four goals for Stony Brook to go with a pair of assists. Werner scored twice with an assist and Dupuis had a goal and an assist. Jen Sandtorv made six saves in goal for the Seawolves.
