EMMITSBURG, Md. - Katie Mason scored four goals to lead Mount St. Mary's past Sacred Heart 12-4 in Northeast Conference women's lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon. Mason tied a career high with four markers and also added two assists. The Pioneers fall to 6-4 overall and 2-2 in the league with the loss while the Mount improves to 6-4 and 3-0 in the NEC.
Heather Gureckis, who scored four goals in the 12-8 win against Long Island on Friday, paced the Pioneers with two markers in the loss. Katie Salamone tallied a goal and an assist, and JoAnn Montesarchio also found the twine in the contest.
Mount St. Mary's jumped out to the early advantage and withstood a Sacred Heart comeback attempt in the first half to go on for the victory in a rematch of last year's NEC semifinals.
The Mount scored the first four goals of the game to grab a 4-0 advantage with 22:19 remaining in the first half. Kirby Day got the scoring started on an 8-meter goal 43 seconds into the contest. Mason increased the margin with a free-position goal at 4:03. Nicole Di'Angelo recorded her 13th goal of the year at 5:11 before Lauren Reymann capped the run with a tally at the 7:41 mark.
The Pioneers cut the deficit in half after Salamone and Gureckis each found the twine in a span of 22 seconds. Montesarchio, Sacred Heart's leading scorer, recorded her 26th tally of the season off a feed from Jamie Pettit at the 14:05 mark. Paris restored a three-goal margin at 21:11, but Salomone found Gureckis with 18 seconds left in the half to go into the break trailing 6-4.
In the NEC semifinals last season, the Mount led 5-2 at halftime before the Pioneers came back to tie the contest at 5-all. The Mountaineers made sure there would be no comeback in this meeting by holding Sacred Heart off the scoreboard in the second half and posting six goals for a 12-4 win.

Sacred Heart is back in action on Tuesday afternoon traveling to Siena for a 4 pm start.
