Sacred Heart Host CCSU on Senior Day... The Pioneer close out the regular season hosting Central Connecticut on Sunday afternoon on Senior Day. The Pioneers are headed to the Northeast Conference Tournament in two weeks as the #2 seed in the four team field, their highest seeding in their five appearances in the playoffs.
2006 Senior Class... SHU will recognize graduating seniors Emily Tully, Candice Celebre and Nicole Macri, along with their parents, before today's game.
The Series... Sacred Heart leads the all-time series, 6-0. The Pioneers have won every meeting since the 2000 season, three at home and three in New Britain. The Pioneers posted a 16-9 win in the first-ever meeting in 2000.
Up Next... The Pioneers move on to the Northeast Conference Tournament on May 5th and 7th. The tournament will take place at the site of the regular season champion.
Last Meeting with CCSU... Sacred Heart rang up 10 first half goals en route to a 16-5 win over Central Connecticut on March 26, 2005. The Pioneers got five goals from sophomore Brianna Bubeck. The Pioneers scored eight unanswered goals over the first 15 minutes of the first half. Senior JoAnn Montesarchio scored three times on their run while Bubeck and sophomore Heather Gureckis each had two markers. SHU tacked on two more before the end of the half, one off the stick of junior Emily Tully and one from sophomore Maureen Hohn. The Pioneers out shot Central 21-7 over the first 30 minutes, while also winning 11 of 12 draw controls. Tully made it a 10 goal advantage, 11-1, 24 seconds into the second half, scoring her third goal of the day, unassisted. Bubeck came up with three straight goals for the Pioneers, one unassisted, followed by Hohn's second from the free position to build a 16-4 lead with just over five minutes to play. Sacred Heart's Bubeck added an assist to her five goals to finish the game with six total points.
Scouting the Blue Devils... The Central Connecticut Blue Devils are 3-10 overall and 3-4 in the NEC this year. The Blue Devils are led by Abbey Capobianco who has 35 goals and 10 assists on the year for 45 points. Julia Steier leads the team with 19 assists. Amy Clark, Abby Hayes, Stephanie John and Danielle Adams all have double digit goals on the year.
Last Time Out... Junior Brianna Bubeck netted four goals and junior Heather Gureckis contributed two more to help spark a streak of seven unanswered goals in the second half which clinched a 12-5 win over Quinnipiac for the Sacred Heart women's lacrosse squad Friday afternoon. The Pioneers, who now boast a 6-1 conference record, answered to Quinnipiac's first score of the contest when senior Emily Tully tallied her fifteenth goal of the campaign. The Bobcats took a 3-2 lead with just over seven minutes remaining in the half, but Bubeck struck for three aconsecutive goals in a minute and eleven seconds to give the Pioneers a 5-3 halftime lead. The visiting Bobcats evened the score at five apiece when they received goals from senior Melissa Jordan and freshman Nicole Fiore at 1:08 and 4:27 respectively. At 13:26, sophomore Katie Salamone netted a score on a free position shot and the Pioneers never looked back. Sacred Heart received six other goals following Salamone's from Gureckis, junior Maureen Hohn, and freshman Mary Montesarchio to close out the victory.
A Return to the NEC Tournament... After a 0-7 start to the 2006 season, the Northeast Conference Tournament seemed miles away for the SHU women's lax teams. But the Pioneers have rattled off six wins in their last eight games and clinched a spot in the conference tournament with a 6-1 mark in the NEC with one game to go. This year's tournament will take place on May 5th and 7th at the site of the regular season champion.
NEC Records... The 2006 Pioneers have posted their best-ever record in conference play at 6-1. SHU will be the #2 seed in the NEC Tournament in two weeks, their highest seeding in the playoffs in their five appearances.
History... This is the Pioneer's eighth year of competition in the Northeast Conference. Sacred Heart has qualified for the NEC Tournament five times and posts a 78-64 Division I record. The Pioneers have posted 10 wins in each of the last three years and have not had a losing season since 1998.
