HAMDEN, Conn. (April 13, 2007) - Sacred Heart sophomores Mary Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY) and Amanda Williams (Monroe, CT) each scored three times to guide the Pioneer women's lacrosse team to a 13-11 win at Quinnipiac Friday afternoon in a key Northeast Conference battle. The Pioneers held off a late Bobcat charge and ran out the clock for the remaining 3:45 of play to garner the win and even their NEC record at 3-3 with two league games to play.
Sacred Heart (5-7, 3-3 NEC) came out firing and took a quick 4-0 lead just 8:06 into the game before running their lead to 8-1 by the 7:45 mark. Montesarchio started the run followed by a pair from Williams and one from junior Alyssa Harris (Kings Park, NY). Quinnipiac put one on the board at 20:55 off the stick of Katie Latonick but SHU answered right back with another 4-0 jaunt.
Senior Brianna Bubeck (Bethlehem, NY), who for the first time all season was held without a goal, passed out three of her career-high four assists on the run. Bubeck started the rally setting up Montesarchio for her second at 20:08. The Pioneers struck again at 12:42 as Bubeck fed fellow senior Maureen Hohn (Lutherville, MD). Williams found the net for the third time at 8:42 off a pass from freshman Carissa Hauser (East Northport, NY) and then scored herself at 7:45 from Bubeck for an 8-1 SHU lead.
Quinnipiac (7-5, 5-2 NEC) responded with three straight goals to cut the Pioneer lead to 8-4 but Sacred Heart's Liz Ottey (Baltimore, MD) had the last say with a goal before the half ended with 1:14 on the clock. The teams went to recess with the Pioneers in control with a 9-4 lead.
The Bobcats struck first in the second half, scoring out of the gates at 28:15. Sacred Heart put a damper in a comeback effort to begin the second half with two straight goals from Harris and Katie Salamone (Baltimore, MD) for an 11-5 lead. The two teams traded goals from just under the 18 minute mark until 14:46 with Montesarchio notching her third and Ottey tacking on her second of the half to give the Pioneers a 13-7 advantage.
The Bobcats geared up and put together one more rally, scoring four-straight. Quinnipiac scored 20 seconds after the Ottey goal on a free position shot, won the ensuing draw control and buried another just 12 seconds later to cut the lead to four at 13-9. Two more scores at 9:42 and 7:46 pulled QU within 13-11 but the Pioneers took control and ran out the clock. After a Quinnipiac turnover inside the eight-meter arc, Sacred Heart regained possession and successfully cleared the ball with 3:45 remaining in regulation. The Pioneers kept possession of the ball inside the restraining line until the clock ran out for the win.
SHU used a balanced offensive attack with seven different Pioneers finding the back of the net while collecting eight assists on their 13 goals. In addition to her three goals, Montesarchio passed out a pair of assists to finish the game with a team-high five points. Freshman Chelsea Wagner (Aurora, CO) made 11 saves on 22 chances to pick up the win.
The Pioneers remain tied for 4th place in the NEC standings with Robert Morris and Long Island, all at 3-3. SHU will host St. Francis (PA) on "Senior Day" this Sunday at 11:00 am. Sacred Heart closes the regular season next Sunday, April 22nd at Central Connecticut at 1:00 pm
