Sacred Heart Pioneers (4-6, 2-3 NEC) vs. Marist Red Foxes (5-4, 2-1 MAAC)

SHU Closes Non-Conference Play at Marist... The Pioneer women's lacrosse team will travel to Marist College on Tuesday afternoon to close out the non-conference portion of their schedule. Sacred Heart got back in the win column last Thursday with a 12-10 win over visiting Wagner College in Northeast Conference action. Coming in, SHU had lost three-straight in the league as they take a break from NEC play for one game facing the Red Foxes.
The Series... The Pioneers lead the all-time series, 7-1. The Red Foxes snapped a Pioneer seven-game winning streak in the series with a 12-8 win in Fairfield last season. The two teams met for the first time during the 1999 season with SHU posting a 16-4 win at home. The Pioneers and Red Foxes have met every season since. SHU is 3-1 at home and 4-0 on the road in this series.
Up Next... Sacred Heart returns to NEC play on Friday afternoon at Quinnipiac before coming home on Sunday for "Senior Day" against Saint Francis (PA).
Last Meeting with Marist... Sophomore Jessica O'Brien scored three times and assisted on another to lead the Marist College women's lacrosse team to a 12-8 road win at Sacred Heart on February 28th last season. O'Brien and freshman Megan White each scored goals in the first five minutes to give the Red Foxes a 2-0 lead. Junior Maureen Hohn and Mary Montesarchio evened it at 2-2 for the Pioneers with 20 minutes left in the first half. Marist scored four more times before the half to lead 6-3 at the intermission. Marist scored the first four goals of the second half, two of them from sophomore Val Amodeo, to take a commanding 10-3 lead 11 minutes into the period. Sacred Heart finally got the offense rolling and scored the next five in a row to close to 10-8. Hohn had the last SHU tally with 9:22 to go in the game. Junior Brianna Bubeck had two scores during the Pioneer run. O'Brien dashed the Pioneer hopes with an unassisted clinching goal with just 1:11 left in the game.
Scouting the Red Foxes... The Marist women's lacrosse team saw their three-game winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon, falling at Boston College 9-8. The Red Fox had been riding a three-game MAAC winning streak where they beat Binghamton, Manhattan and Iona, scoring at least 20 goals in each win. Marist has four players who have scored 20 or more points on the year led by Liz Falco who has a team-best 26 goals with two assists. Ali Carnabuci has 20 goals on the season while Stephanie Garland leads the team with 11 assists. Lindsay Diener has 19 goals and nine assists. Liz Burkhard has played the majority of minutes in goal with an 11.14 goals against average with 60 saves.
SHU Among the Nation's Stat Leaders... Senior Brianna Bubeck is 7th in the country in draw wins and tied for 23rd in goals per game. Freshman Chelsea Wagner is 17th in the nation in save percentage with her 17 saves against Monmouth ranking 14th for the most saves in a game by a player this season. Senior Maureen Hohn is tied for 27th in caused turnovers per game.
Pioneers in the NEC Stat Rankings... The Pioneers are among the conference leaders offensively and defensively. SHU is 4th in the NEC in goals per game (10.40) and 3rd in shots per game (26.70). Defensively, the Pioneers ranked 4th in caused turnovers (9.40) and 3rd in goals against (10.98). Senior Brianna Bubeck is 3rd in the NEC in goals per game (3.00) and points per game (3.70). She is 3rd in shots per game (7.20).
History... This is the Pioneer's ninth year of competition in the Northeast Conference. Sacred Heart has qualified for the NEC Tournament five times and posts a 85-70 Division I record. The Pioneers have posted 10 wins three times and have not had a losing season since 1998.
