FAIRFIELD, Conn. (March 24, 2008) - Sacred Heart senior Liz Ottey (Baltimore, MD) and sophomore Chelsea Wagner (Aurora, CO) were honored with a pair of Northeast Conference Women's Lacrosse weekly awards Monday afternoon. Ottey took home the league's Player of the Week award while Wagner was tabbed the conference's Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Pioneers to a pair of wins over Monmouth and Mount St. Mary's, the preseason co-favorites, last week.
Ottey served as the offensive catalyst for the Pioneers last week with six goals and a pair of assists in wins over the two programs that have combined to capture the last four NEC titles. Ottey scored three times - one on an eight-meter free position shot - and added a caused turnover in a 12-9 conquest of defending league champion Monmouth on Thursday. She rung up five points on Saturday to lead Sacred Heart to an 11-10 victory over Mount St. Mary's. In that outing, Ottey converted another free position shot and scored all three of her goals in the first half as the Pioneers built a 7-4 advantage at the break. The Baltimore, MD product also set up teammates Mary Montesarchio and Carissa Hauser in the win. Ottey currently ranks second on the Pioneers with 15 goals, four assists and 19 points. She paces the NEC with nine free position goals.
Wagner turned in a pair of strong performances in goal for the Pioneers in home wins over NEC preseason co-favorites Monmouth (12-9) and Mount St. Mary's (11-10) last week. The Aurora, CO native made 25 saves on the week and compiled a .568 save percentage. Wagner stopped 12 shots and allowed just nine goals to a Monmouth team that leads the NEC with over 12 goals per outing. She racked up 13 saves and collected two ground balls against the Mount. Wagner has posted double digit saves in all but one game this season and leads the league in goals against average (10.56), saves per game (12.33, sixth nationally) and save percentage (.539, ninth nationally).
The duo will lead the Pioneers back into action Tuesday afternoon at home against Lafayette.
