The Pioneers were selected as the #6 seed
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University men's tennis team prepares for the Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship Tournament starting Friday, April 12, at Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, N.J.
As the sixth seed, the Pioneers will face Saint Francis University in the first round Friday at 11:30 a.m. The Pioneers fell just short to the Red Flash earlier this season 4-3.
The Pioneers finished the season 5-15 overall and 3-4 in the NEC. Last year, the Pioneers fell to FDU in the NEC Semifinals.
Head coach Mike Guastelle is looking forward to a great start on Friday. "We get a chance to avenge a tough 4-3 loss to St. Francis earlier this year in the first round, said Guastelle. "If we can win that one, I give us as good a chance as anybody to win the NEC title."
Lefteri Apostolou led the way for the Pioneers in singles play securing a 14-8 overall record and a 5-2 NEC record at No. 1.
Matyas Vencl has also been a key contributor for the Pioneers in conference play with four wins at No. 2.
In doubles play this season, Vencl and Darius Eftekhar have secured four wins in conference at No. 2. First year Enrique Laennec-Baffrey and Apostolou have three wins in conference.
