NORTH HAVEN, CONN. — The Sacred Heart men's tennis team mounted an impressive comeback to defeat Quinnipiac University, 4-3, on March 22 at North Haven Health & Racquet Club.
The Pioneers found themselves in an early hole after dropping the doubles point, as Quinnipiac claimed a 1-0 lead. Momentum continued to favor the Bobcats in singles play, where Sacred Heart fell at No. 3 and No. 1 to trail 3-0.
From there, the Pioneers responded in dramatic fashion. Sacred Heart battled back with four gritty three-set victories across the lineup. Frederick McRae started the turnaround with a hard-fought win, followed by Paul Goncalves and Martin Macias, who each outlasted their opponents in three sets to even the match.
With the contest tied at 3-3, it all came down to No. 6 singles. Connor Liona delivered in the clutch, battling through a decisive third set to secure the clinching point and complete the comeback victory.
With the win, Sacred Heart improves to 2-2 in conference play as next the Pioneers will travel to Marist on March 29th in MAAC play.
