
SHU Women's Lacrosse Downs Albany, 15-10, in Home Opener

FAIRFIELD, CT (March 12, 2003) - The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team picked-up their first win of the 2003 season and opened the home portion of their schedule with a 15-10 victory over the University at Albany Wednesday afternoon. Senior Jenn Girouard (South Windsor, CT) led the way for the Pioneers, netting five goals and two assists as SHU improves to 1-1 on the young season.
The Great Danes got out of the gates early, building a 3-0 lead on a goal by senior Andrea Esposito and two by freshman Domenica LoRe over the first 10 minutes of play. Albany built their lead to 5-2 half way through the first period before the Pioneers came to life and rallied back. Junior Jackie Reichert (Nesconset, NY) got SHU on the board and senior Michelle Bruckner (Carle Place, NY) and Girouard put two goals up to knot the game at 6-6 at the half.
The Pioneers took control in the second session, outscoring Albany nine to four en route to the final 15-10 score. Girouard would add three more goals in the second half while Bruckner netted another to go with an assist for four points on the afternoon. Sophomore Mary Romano (Baldwin, NY) scored two goals and handed out two assists for four points while junior Christina Macchia (Carle Place, NY) added two goals and an assist in the win. Junior goalkeeper Amy Lavoie (Nashua, NH) recorded 11 saves on the day for the Pioneers.
For Albany, now 0-3 on the year, LoRe led the Great Danes with two goals and two assists. Senior Maria Ferrucci finished with three goals while Esposito added two goals in the loss. Senior Amanda Heller made two saves in goal for Albany.
Sacred Heart returns to action on Wednesday, March 19th, as they travel to Holy Cross for a 3 pm match.
