
Lehigh Edges Sacred Heart Women's Lacrosse, 9-8

FAIRFIELD, CT (March 28, 2003) - The Lehigh University women's lacrosse team used two late goals to come away with a hard fought 9-8 decision over Sacred Heart University Friday afternoon. The Pioneers fought their way back from three-goals down on two separate occasions but came up just short in the final seconds to even their record at 3-3 on the season.
SHU grabbed the early advantage when junior Christina Macchia (Carle Place, NY) picked-up the first of her three goals just 29 seconds into the game. The Mountain Hawks would have an answer, ripping off four-straight goals to go up 4-1 with just over seven minutes to play in the half. Sacred Heart used a late first-half surge to tie the game at 4-4 on Macchia's second, a goal by sophomore JoAnn Montesarchio (Cortlandt Manor, NY), and senior Michelle Bruckner's (Carle Place, NY) goal with three seconds on the clock.
Lehigh took advantage right out of the blocks to start the second period, building a 7-4 lead on two goals by Meredith Carso and a goal by Ella Studdiford in the first five minutes of play. With 21:40 left on the clock, the Pioneers began their march back, starting with junior Jackie Reichert (Nesconset, NY) taking a Macchia pass and burying it in the back of the net. Bruckner followed with her second and Macchia tied the game at 7-7 with 5:56 to play on her third goal. The Mountain Hawks would not be denied as Carso buried her game-high fifth goal and sophomore Barrie Cominsky gave LU a two-goal advantage with just under two minutes to play.
Bruckner cut the lead to one, firing her free position attempt past Lehigh goalie Kyle Begina with 42 seconds to go. The Pioneers would come up just short, as Montesarchio's shot went just wide in the final seconds. For SHU, Macchia's three goals and an assist while Bruckner added three goals of her own. Montesarchio found the back of the net once to go with her two assists. In goal, junior Amy Lavoie (Nashua, NH) made 13 saves in the loss.
For Lehigh, Carso netted five goals on the day while Cominsky added two and an assist. Begina made 10 saves in goal as the Mountain Hawks improve to 5-2 on the year.
Sacred Heart will open Northeast Conference play this weekend when they host St. Francis (PA) this Sunday, March 30th at 12 noon.
